Opening up Your Range in SnGs
It’s been a long standing tradition to play tight in SnGs in the early rounds and to play hyper aggressive as the field starts to narrow. The basic premise of this was to let the other players beat up on each other while you patiently waited for your monsters and occasionally steal blinds due to your super tight table image.
But I’ve been doing some experimentation. And I’ve found a few tricks that may help you build that stack while you’re waiting for others to go out. See poker is constantly evolving. And now that the super tight style if permeating the SnG world in the early game, it’s time for a change.
This is something I never thought I’d say about online poker, but it’s time to become a calling station. But there’s a certain finesse to doing this.
First, you have to be in position. If you’re calling out of position and get raised, then you’re just wasting money.
The second thing you’ll want to take into consideration is the strength of your hand. I’m not talking about calling in position with 83 offsuit. Things like KQ or QTs in late position with no raisers in front of you are ideal hands to call with in the early levels.
This way, when you do hit a flop hard, you merely have to outplay your opponents in the postflop game.
And in poker online SnGs this is easy to do if you have that tight table image. Most of the time you’ll get checked around to and you can simply make a bet and take down the pot. If that doesn’t work, a small continuation bet on the turn can work wonders.
So this is definitely something I’d advocate trying if you’re looking to increase your stack before you get to the middle and late stages of the SnG game. However, I warn you, before you try this trick, you need to have some solid postflop game. Otherwise you’ll just be throwing away good money due to inexperience.
